Apple Stores Hold Line on Prices

Over the past week, we surveyed Apple Stores to gauge trends in sales of iPod’s and computers. We asked the following questions:

 

  1. Are you discounting any iPod’s?

  2. What is the best selling iPod model?

  3. Have you sold more iPod’s in the past month than in the previous month?

  4. Are you planning on discounting computers soon?

 

  • 87% of respondents said they were not discounting iPod’s currently.

  • 63% of respondents said that the iPod Touch was the best selling iPod model. 23% said that the new iPod Shuffle was the best selling model.

  • 57% of respondents said they had sold more iPod’s in this past month than in the previous month.

  • 63% of respondents reported not discounting computers or any kind. 37% said they were discounting computers.


Conclusion of Channel Check: Apple stores appear to be holding the line on pricing. This trend has been consistent throughout 2009. We believe that the pricing discipline could positively impact Apple’s performance. Business also appears to be trending upwards in April. In our related survey on AT&T stores (www.thechannelcheckers.com/blogs/) sales of the iPhone continue to look strong with positive trends in new iPhone account openings in addition to simple hardware unit sales.

Guitar Hero: Metallica Looks Like a Winner, Wii Back in Charge of Consoles.

Over the past week, The Channel Checkers surveyed 24 GameStop and EB Games (same parent company) stores across the United States to track sales trends of gaming consoles and video games.

  1. What is the best selling game platform?

  2. What is the best selling video game right nowt?

  3. What will be the next big game released over the next three months?

  • Nintendo Wii was seen as the top selling console by 58% of respondents. A large shift from last momth when only 27% saw it as the top console. 17% saw the microsoft X-box as the top console compared to 40% said Microsoft X-box was the top selling game console last month. 17% cited the PS3 as the top console. 8% say the Nintendo DS is the top seller.

  • 50% of respondents saw Resident Evil 5, produced by Capcom, as the top selling game. No other game was mentioned by more than one respondent.

  • Guitar Hero: Metallica from Activision, was seen as the most anticipated new game (this game was released on March 29th, the day after our survey ended) coming out in the next month according to 29% of respondents. 20% of respondents cited Pokemon Platinum (launched on March 21, in New York) as the most exciting new game coming out.

Conclusion of Channel Check: Nintendo Wii staged a major comeback in March from February and moved solidly into the lead in our survey. Sony Playstation 3 continues to be stronger versus recent history and was tied with Xbox for second in responses in our survey. StreetFighter IV has faded since last month with Resident Evil 5 taking over as the clear best seller in our survey. Capcom makes both games. Halo Wars was the most highly anticipated new game last month, but that has not translated into strong current sales for the game according to our survey.
